A Two Horse Race
Debi Jones
Debi was selected as the Parliament Candidate for the constituency of Sefton Central in May General Election 2010. The UK Parliament operates on different boundaries with different constituency names.
Debi lives in Crosby, Liverpool with her husband Steve, and daughter Ruth who is 14 years old. Debi has been entertaining us on television and radio for over 20 years.

Her original aim was to be an opera singer after winning a national scholarship at the age of 18 which lead to her being offered a place with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company. However a meeting with the head of BBC Radio Merseyside lead to her being offered the afternoon show 2 - 5pm Monday to Friday. Her popularity increased by the month due to her unique "tell it as it is" style of presentation, and by the time she left 5 years later, she had the largest afternoon audience of any BBC local radio afternoon show in the country.

She went on to present "People Today", the national morning show for BBC 1 television for a further two years during which time she travelled the world, presented "Pebble Mill at One" and performed some "Un-Conservative-type" stunts (her words!) such as rally driving, abseiling, and jumping in the world's largest jelly with a rugby team for Children in Need!

Debi has continued her career as a broadcaster, working for Radio 5 Live, Radio City Gold, Granada Television, and more recently, for the wonderful world of "Shopping Telly". Her approachability and honesty have gained her something of a cult following in shopping TV, and she works on a freelance basis for several channels. Debi is a fully qualified trainer, specializing in media and image training for several blue chip companies. She also gained her B.Ed in Liverpool.

Add to all of this a leading role in a British Film Industry award winning film, after dinner speaking, and several stints in pantomime, and you have an entertaining and informative lady who you'll certainly never forget!

Debi Jones' Experience
In 2004, Debi decided to pursue a long held ambition to enter the political arena, and was selected as the Parliamentary Candidate for the constituency of Crosby. Although she did not win, during the eight months of her campaign she greatly raised the profile of the party in the area, and gained the trust of a large number of constituents who would not normally have voted Conservative.

This was conclusively demonstrated when she stood for council in May 2006. She gained a seat in a strong, traditionally Labour ward with 50% of the vote, and the largest majority for 20 years. She continued her success by being selected as the Parliamentary Candidate for the new target seat of Sefton Central in a full open primary selection in August 2006.

In her capacity as a Councillor, she was the Conservative spokesperson for Children's Services. She formed "Crosby Village Action Group" due to the fact that Sainsbury's has recently purchased nearly half of the buildings in the centre, and this has raised fears about the future for smaller traders. She also recently revealed plans by the police to review opening hours of the local police stations in Sefton.

As a result of this, she received a personal assurance from Chief Superintendant Ian Pilling that he would not reduce the opening hours of any station. Debi has also working closely with the Police and Youth agencies to give the young people of Formby somewhere to meet at night, as local residents often feel threatened by the large groups which gather in this area. Debi is also Vice-President for Aintree Hospital League of Friends.
